Putting files in folders is a hell where ideas are lost forever.
I'm mostly joking, but there's some truth to this. ben.icon
The heirarchical structure of files in folders in computers and many apps is a huge barrier to knowledge. Why? The time spent deciding where and how to organize is extra painful when it forces you to break your flow state. Even files that are super carefully organized this way are still:
hard to access
easy to lose or forget
hard to re-categorize
lack context
Almost all files cross two or more categories, but they have to be put in one folder or duplicated which both create headaches
Too many knowledge management tools use this structure purely out of familiarity and becuase many people don't know any better. This friction can be overcome. There is a better way. The solution is linked thinking.
